◆ Broker Coverage

Coverage for brokers, not truckers

A broker never owns the truck, but you can still be pulled into the claim. When a carrier you hired has a lapse, a denied claim or no coverage, the shipper and the injured party often look at the broker. The right package closes those gaps.

◆ Authority Requirements

What you need to start as a broker

Federal rules apply to anyone arranging for-hire interstate freight for compensation. The basics are below.

Typical federal requirements:
  • Broker operating authority: an MC number issued by FMCSA.
  • BOC-3: designation of a process agent in each state.
  • Financial security: $75,000 via a BMC-84 surety bond or BMC-85 trust fund.
  • Insurance beyond the bond: shippers and carriers often contractually require contingent auto, contingent cargo, GL and E&O.

Rules and amounts can change. We confirm current FMCSA requirements before you file. This page is general information, not a compliance determination.

◆ Broker FAQ

Freight broker insurance, answered

What does a freight broker need to operate legally?

A freight broker needs FMCSA broker operating authority (an MC number) and a BOC-3 process agent filing, and must maintain $75,000 in financial security, typically a BMC-84 surety bond or a BMC-85 trust fund. Requirements can change, so we confirm current FMCSA rules before you file.

Is the BMC-84 bond the same as freight broker insurance?

No. The BMC-84 bond is financial security that protects carriers and shippers if a broker fails to pay. It does not cover your own liability. Brokers usually add contingent auto liability, contingent cargo, general liability and professional liability (E&O) to cover the exposures that come with arranging loads.

What is contingent auto liability and contingent cargo?

Contingent coverage responds when the carrier you hired has no insurance or their policy fails to pay. Contingent auto liability covers injury or property damage claims from a hired truck, and contingent cargo covers freight lost or damaged when the carrier's cargo coverage does not respond.

Do you offer service in Spanish?

Yes. Quotes, service and claims support are available in both English and Spanish.
